Currently, the mainstream centralized heating solutions include the following:

Hot Water Boiler Heating System

Large-scale farms typically use centralized heating systems, including hot water or steam boilers, in-house heat exchanger units, fans, negative pressure systems, and automatic alarm and temperature controllers. The working principle is to preheat fresh outside air and evenly cover the chickens, while ensuring the basic needs of the chickens during winter with minimal ventilation. Heat exchange pipes are generally installed on the inner side of the outer wall of the chicken house, 500 mm above the ground. Depending on the local climate and insulation conditions, one or two parallel pipes may be installed. The house temperature is generally maintained at 10-16℃.

Air Source Heat Pump: A Clean and Efficient Modern Solution

Air source heat pumps are an environmentally friendly heating method that has emerged in recent years. They absorb heat energy from the air or ground source for heat exchange and circulation. Compared to traditional coal-fired heating, air source heat pumps offer significant improvements in environmental friendliness, energy efficiency, and ease of operation. In practical applications, a broiler farm uses a ground source heat pump system for precise temperature control. For newly hatched chicks (requiring 35℃), the ground source heat pump absorbs geothermal energy to heat the water to 58℃, which is then piped to the chicken house for indirect heating through hot water circulation. A newly built chicken house uses 12 52HP air source heat pump units for centralized heating, and has been operating efficiently and stably for 5 years. A certain company’s broiler farm uses an air source heat pump system for centralized heating, achieving full automation of water, feed, and ventilation, increasing the broiler survival rate to over 97%.

                V. The following points deserve special attention:

1. Installation of the Brooding Heater

Hang the equipment in the center of the site, maintaining a height between 1.8-2.0 meters. Adjustments can be made according to actual conditions. For multi-level chicken farming, install the heater above the cage in the center of the site, ensuring it is centered and higher than the cage. The temperature probe should be suspended midway between the heater and the ground, and the height can be adjusted as needed. The number of heaters installed depends on the size of the site and the required temperature.

2. Installation of the Far-Infrared Heater

Install the far-infrared heater with the dark brown coating facing down, 2 meters above the ground. Eight 500-watt far-infrared panels can heat a 50-square-meter chicken house. To ensure even heating, a small fan can be installed between the far-infrared panels.

3. Safety Precautions for Coal Stove Heating

Coke burning for heating is strictly prohibited in sealed chicken houses! A poultry farmer suffered a tragic loss of 2,000 chickens due to excessive carbon monoxide levels caused by burning charcoal in a sealed chicken coop. When using coal stoves, the following must be ensured: the chimney must extend at least 1 meter above the roof; check for leaks at the connection points with soapy water; install a carbon monoxide alarm every 20 square meters; and ensure good ventilation.

4. Electrical Safety of Electric Heating Equipment

For single-unit installations, it is recommended to use copper wire of at least 1.5 square millimeters to avoid voltage drops that could affect heating efficiency. Old-fashioned heat lamps should not be left on continuously for more than 8 hours, and electrical wires must never come into contact with water.

VI. Proper maintenance can significantly reduce malfunctions.

Daily Maintenance

After each batch of poultry: Thoroughly clean the heater inside and out with compressed air or a soft brush, removing dust from the motor housing to prevent overheating and shutdown.

After each use: Check the air inlet and outlet for blockages.

Gas-fired equipment: Regularly check all gas pipe connections and gas hose joints for gas leaks.

Regular Maintenance

Spring and Autumn: Conduct periodic maintenance and inspection of the entire equipment.

Coal/Gas-fired equipment: Focus on inspecting the flue, burner, and sealing components.

Electrical equipment: Check for aging or damaged wiring, and ensure the thermostat and sensors are functioning correctly.

Poultry farm heaters are indispensable core equipment in the entire poultry farm’s winter management and brooding process. From brooding umbrellas and hot air furnaces in small and medium-sized farms to centralized heating systems with hot water boilers and air source heat pump systems in large-scale farms, each heating solution has its unique applicable scenarios and advantages.

Choosing the right heater requires comprehensive consideration of the scale of the farm, local climate conditions, power or fuel supply, and a balance between initial budget and long-term operating costs. During installation and use, following standardized installation requirements, mastering scientific operating techniques, and establishing a routine maintenance system will not only ensure maximum heating efficiency but also effectively extend the equipment’s lifespan and improve farming profitability.

In the current trend towards large-scale, intelligent, and green poultry farming, the precise temperature control and clean, efficient characteristics of heaters are irreplaceable in improving chick survival rates, feed conversion ratios, reducing farming costs, and achieving environmental compliance.

Poultry are extremely sensitive to temperature changes, especially chicks.
