The litter is typically made of absorbent, soft, and dry materials such as rice husks, sawdust, chopped corn stalks, rice straw, and wheat straw.

During the rearing process, chicken manure gradually accumulates on the litter. Through the chickens’ constant scratching and manual turning, the manure mixes with the litter and ferments. A well-managed deep litter system provides a comfortable living environment for poultry while simultaneously achieving the resource utilization of manure.

II. Low Investment Costs and Simple Equipment Requirements

One of the biggest advantages of deep litter systems is their low equipment investment. Compared to cage rearing or wire mesh rearing, deep litter systems do not require expensive cages or wire mesh beds, and have lower requirements for chicken house construction. Ordinary houses, or even slightly modified pig pens and cattle sheds, can be used for deep litter farming. This “low investment, quick results” characteristic makes it particularly suitable for small and medium-sized farmers with limited funds.

2. Excellent Thermal Insulation Performance

The litter itself is an excellent insulation layer. In cold winters, thick litter can insulate against the cold and damp air from the ground, while the heat generated by the fermentation of chicken manure in the litter can also raise the temperature inside the house. Experienced farmers have calculated that if the litter is too thin, resulting in a low house temperature, the chickens will need to consume more feed to keep warm—for a scale of 10,000 chickens, if each chicken eats an extra 5 grams of feed per day, an extra 1,500 kilograms of feed will be needed per month, and the cost of feed is far higher than the investment in litter.

3. Reduced Leg and Breast Cyst Incidence

The soft, elastic litter effectively cushions the pressure on the chickens’ bodies. Compared to floor rearing, deep litter rearing significantly reduces the incidence of breast cysts and leg diseases in broilers. Chickens moving on soft litter distribute pressure evenly on their legs, reducing the risk of injury caused by friction and pressure from hard surfaces.

4. Moisture Absorption and Deodorization

High-quality litter can absorb 75%-80% of the moisture in manure, diluting and fermenting it, reducing direct contact between chickens and manure. Simultaneously, the litter absorbs and buffers harmful gases such as ammonia produced during manure decomposition, helping to improve air quality in the chicken house.

5. Resource Utilization of Manure

Turning Waste into Treasure: The mixture of litter and chicken manure in a deep litter system is a high-quality organic fertilizer. After one production cycle, the mixture of litter and manure produced by 100 laying hens is sufficient to fertilize 0.4 hectares (approximately 6 mu) of rice, wheat, or other grain fields, or 0.2 hectares (approximately 3 mu) of vegetable fields. This model realizes the reuse of agricultural waste and the resource utilization of manure, aligning with the current direction of ecological farming and green development.

6. Conforms to the Natural Behavioral Habits of Poultry

Chickens are naturally inclined to scratch and peck. In a deep litter system, chickens can freely scratch and peck at wasted feed scraps in the litter. During this scratching process, chickens also pick up enzymes, which help reduce problems such as “gizzard erosion.” Furthermore, chickens can take sand baths in the litter, removing lice and other external parasites.

7. Brooding and Adult Chickens Can Be Completed in the Same Chicken House

In a deep litter system, chicks can complete their brooding, adult egg-laying, or market-ready stages in the same chicken house, eliminating the need for a separate brooding house. This saves on construction investment and reduces the stress caused by relocation.

III. High Litter Requirement and Continuous Cost Investment

Deep litter systems require a large amount of litter, which typically needs to be completely replaced at the end of each rearing cycle. High-quality litter such as rice husks and sawdust are in high demand and cost, and their supply varies by region, making them difficult to obtain reliably in some areas. This results in a recurring investment.

2. Low Stocking Density and Large Footprint

Deep litter systems have relatively low stocking densities. Approximately 12 broiler chickens and 4.5 ducks can be raised per square meter in floor-raised systems. Compared to cage rearing, the same number of chickens requires a larger chicken house area, resulting in lower land utilization.

3. Difficult Litter Management and High Disease Risk

This is the core challenge of deep litter systems. Chickens are in direct contact with litter and feces. Improper management leading to damp litter can easily cause various digestive and respiratory diseases, such as E. coli infection, coccidiosis, and chronic respiratory diseases. The risk of coccidiosis is particularly prominent—damp litter provides favorable conditions for the sporulation of coccidia oocysts.

4. Ammonia and Dust Issues

Deep litter chicken houses are prone to high ammonia concentrations and excessive dust. Ammonia irritates the respiratory mucosa of poultry, inducing respiratory diseases; while litter dust can cause respiratory discomfort in chickens. This necessitates a good ventilation system in the chicken house.

5. Not Suitable for High Humidity Areas

Deep litter systems are not suitable for use in humid areas with humidity levels as high as 80%-90%. In high humidity environments, litter is difficult to keep dry, and damp litter accelerates the spread of disease. Therefore, farmers in rainy southern regions need to be extra cautious when choosing this system.

6. High Labor Intensity

Deep litter systems require frequent litter management. The litter needs to be turned regularly (at least once a week) to prevent chicken manure from clumping on the surface; wet litter around waterers and feed troughs should be removed promptly and replenished with fresh litter. Especially in humid weather, the frequency and workload of turning the litter increase.

7. Relatively Low Production Efficiency

Studies have shown that deep litter systems may be less efficient than cage systems in terms of feed conversion. Caged laying hens generally outperform deep litter systems in terms of egg production, feed efficiency, and egg weight. Furthermore, deep litter systems have relatively lower production efficiency.

Deep litter systems, as a classic poultry farming method, have distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages include: low investment cost, good insulation, reduced leg diseases and breast cysts, resource utilization of manure, and alignment with the natural habits of poultry. These characteristics make them an ideal choice for small and medium-sized farmers and areas with limited resources.

Disadvantages mainly include: high and continuous demand for litter, low stocking density, high risk of disease due to difficult litter management, and unsuitability for high-humidity areas.

Selection Recommendations:

Small and medium-sized farms and farmers with limited funds: Deep litter systems are a cost-effective option, but significant effort must be put into litter management.

Large-scale, highly automated farms: Consider cage rearing or wire mesh floor rearing to improve land utilization and management efficiency.

Southern rainy and humid areas: Extra caution is needed when using deep litter systems; proper ventilation and moisture control are essential.

Regardless of the chosen farming method, scientific management is the fundamental guarantee for achieving good farming results.
